Brief and Requirements

The Exhibition design was inspired by "Joy" - a rotating shelf unit constructed from medium-density fibreboard, embodying a scratch-resistant white, black and burgundy colour palette.

The exhibition must showcase the bookshelves in different configurations and revolve around two keywords that describe the "Joy". We decided that the driving force of the exhibition will be "Spiral" to symbolise the appearance of the bookshelves and modular to describe the different shelves placed together.

Concept Development

The development began with two focus words that would shape the design and development of the exhibition, "Spiral and Modular". We decided to deconstruct the shelves to create an interactive, maze experience where visitors can discover information about the "Joy" at every corner of the maze. This will be presented with pictures and history about Castiglioni and his works.

The overall layout will consist of L shaped walls at different heights and colours that the Shelves are available in (Burgundy and black). The design will follow a modular grid structure of 100mm x 1000m to evenly disperse the L-shaped walls. When you come to the end of the Maze a spiral staircase, (also constructed from the books shelves) will lead to the exit.

Preliminary Sketches

The preliminary sketches for the exhibit, create dimension and interactivity for visitors. The "Joy" bookshelf is quite mysterious, you feel almost lost within the various shelve heights and variations. We chose 3 different heights to place into the exhibition so visitors can see elements of the maze at different sections.

Above will read "If you are not curious, forget about it" a quote Achille Castiglioni often express when talking about his works. This quote is interesting and connects with the purpose of the exhibition to be curious adds to the fun of a maze and what each turn could bring.

Colour Scheme

When experimenting with the colour scheme of the exhibit, we decided to divide the room into two vertical halves at 2.2 metres. The top half is a lighter colour and the bottom half is a darker colour. The staircase followed a gradient from the darker colour at the bottom to the lighter.

The colour schemes we experimented with was black and white, and burgundy and white. These colour schemes represent the colours the Joy bookshelf is manufactured in. For the final design of the exhibit, we decided to continue with the burgundy and white scheme
