Client Brief and Requirements
Client:
Partners Sue and Andy Baker share a common love of contemporary, Australian Art and are keen cyclists in the Wentworth area. They wish to bring a slice of the coffee and bike culture that thrives throughout inner Sydney to Wentworth Point due to its proximity to Bicentennial Park cycleways – this culture will inform the design of the cafe/retail, and it, in turn, will become part of the local lifestyle, catering to the local community.
Requirements
-
The commercial space below the Bellagio apartments will become a bicycle repair shop and a cafe where locals and visitors can order fresh produce.
-
Relaxed and playful atmosphere.
-
Gallery showcasing Anya Brock's designs.
-
A bold colour palette inspired by Anya Brock's work, Including pink and blue.
-
Allow provision for an internal connecting stairway between levels one and two. The staircase should be a focal point of the space.
Concept Development
Inspired by Australian Art and bike culture, Le Velo is a design that encapsulates a playful colour palette and materiality, integrated within a relaxed and functional venue. Upon entry, colourful plastic seating, and Oak tables contribute to the fun-loving aesthetic. Large and small seating areas provide patrons with the option to dine and/or wait for bicycle repairs which are stationed within the venue.
To the right of the cafe, a multicoloured bar front, with an Empire White Marble top provides a key moment in the design Inspiration, the shades of bold pink and blue reference the exuberant nature of Anya Brock's designs. Walking around the bar will reveal a feature concrete staircase, with a printed wall of Brock's artwork, "Wolf Lane Fircece Face" behind, bringing distinctiveness to the bar materiality. Overlooking the cafe, a gallery showcases Brock's feature designs and striking prints with additional information about the artist.
